How to make you and your service stand out from everyone else online?

Relationship Pillar:Uncategorized

In last week's email, I mentioned my website was coming back as a marketing channel later this year (missed the email, read it here).ย

Over the next few days, I received several DMs offering web design services.

Thank you for reading my emails and for reaching out! It means a lot. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘

And thank you for your offers! I appreciate them in so many ways, including giving me the inspiration for today's newsletter.

Today's topic: How to make you and your service stand out (from the thousands of others who do the same thing)!

One of the pillars I stand on in marketing is building strong connections are a two-way street, a two-way valuable exchange of energy that benefits everyone involved (that energy can be money in exchange for your service).

Think of your business as your baby. You wouldn't just hand it over to a stranger on the street, would you? You'd want to work with someone you know, like, and trust, right?

Especially something as personal as your website, which is your virtual you - representing you 24/7, making sales, while you sleep. And the hard truth is web designers are a dime a dozen - as are most service providers, including me (I'm sorry, but it's true).

So, how do you make yourself stand out, so that you get first option at 'holding the baby?'

One of the ways I made choosing the who easier

Denver, Colorado (our home state in the US), has a major homeless population, with A LOT of people standing on street corners asking for money.

I used to keep change, small bills, a few grocery store gift cards, even dog food, in the car to give because I wanted to help.

The problem was - I was overwhelmed by who to pick because there were/are so many (I wish I could help them all but I just couldn't). ๐Ÿฅบ

So, how did I choose?

I picked the ones where I got something out of the deal!

Some were very creative, finding ways to give value and stand out.

Art of pieces of scrap paper, a spray bottle of water and a squeegee to wash your windshield, small performances or joke telling to entertain and make people laugh while sitting at the stoplight. A cute dog (I can resist the cute man, but not a cute dog ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ˜‚).

They stood out because I got something out of the deal.

Reciprocity is important in relationships because people are more motivated when they get something out of the deal.

I know that sounds icky, but...it's the freaking truth.

You're motivated to do things for others because you get something out of it - even if it's just feeling good. It's okay! It doesn't make you a bad person. You CAN help others while helping yourself, making it a win-win for both parties.

I work with people who have INVESTED in building a connection with me and my business, just like I was drawn to those who put in the effort in Denver.

So, how do you build online relationships that result in clients, collaborations, and super fans?

Rome wasn't built in a day. Neither is trust or relationships. They take time. And they aren't one-sided!

Engagement is key! Just following or reading my content (lurking) isn't enough.

Here's what it looks like online:

  • Engaging with your content:ย Comments, shares, and questions demonstrate you're actively participating.
  • Networking: Coming face to face whether on Zoom or in person makes you more memorable.
  • Collaboration:ย Working together on projects or events fosters a stronger bond.
  • Shout-outs and referrals:ย Recognizing others' work strengthens the community.
  • Being a helping hand:ย Offering support and knowledge fosters trust.

And that doesn't come from lurking.

For example, you might be following me on social media, reading my newsletters, attending my events. You know and see all my stuff, which might be grooming you to become my client. But if you're wanting me to become your client, what are you doing to catch my attention?

Here are 6 ways you can easily stand out, without a lot of effort (and help yourself in the process). ๐Ÿ‘‡

Give to Receive: 6 Easy Ways to Stand Out Online

The key to building strong online relationships is reciprocity. When you offer value to others, they're more likely to reciprocate. Plus, Here are 6 easy ways to add value and get noticed:Give to receive. Have the intention to help them shine, while also intentionally helping yourself. None of these ways take much effort from you, but they can have a heck of an impact for you.

  1. Leave thoughtful comments on their content.ย Don't just hit the like button. Don't just like, comment with questions, insights, or personal experiences. This helps others shine and increases your own visibility by "borrowing" their audience.
  2. If you join their events, be an active and engaged participant in online events.ย Turn on your camera (if possible), participate in discussions, respond to calls to action, and ask questions. This creates a dynamic experience for everyone. Tell people about your experience after.
  3. Give shoutouts to those you admire:ย Share a post you loved, tag them, and explain why it's valuable. This builds relationships, shows appreciation, and exposes you to a new audience.ย Just the other day, I didย a LinkedIn post shouting out 5 of the newsletters I ALWAYS read in my inbox. Easy content withย guaranteed engagement on my company pageย (a place often hard to get engagement), while also supporting my peers.ย
  4. Respond to DMs, even if it's a "no" (but be kind!):ย A professional response shows respect. You never know, the situation might change.
  5. Offer valuable free resources:ย Share a helpful cheat sheet, blog post, or free consultation. This establishes your expertise and gives a taste of your work.
  6. Invite collaborations:ย Partner on a joint webinar, guest blog post, or social media challenge. This expands your reach and creates fresh content.

Remember, the people who stand out are those who give, not just receive. Focus on building win-win relationships and watch your network grow!
