Ever notice how the most successful sales you've made felt nothing like โsellingโ when you made them?
That's because they're built on something far more powerful than scripts or sales tactics. In my 40+ years of sales experience, I've discovered that authentic connection and conversation outperform sales scripts, question lists, and manipulation every time.
Today, I'm sharing the exact framework I've used to close deals up to million-dollar+ with companies like Walmart, GE, and the City of Wilmington without ever feeling pushy or salesy. And I've gone from being paid 4 cents a word for content writing to charging $1000 per blog post.
I didn't use the 'good ole boy' method of networking on the golf course or over drinks. As a woman in business, I didn't have those privileges. Plus, I just find traditional high pressure sales methods painful and full of stress and pressure - something no one likes to experience when making buying decisions.
The Problem with Traditional Sales Approaches
Trying to control online conversations doesn't work because it feels like selling. Plus, no one likes to be โsoldโ to! You can read more about why controlling conversations doesn't work on my LinkedIn post. Cold pitch DMs are especially ineffective. They make people feel like all you care about is the money in their wallet. It's dehumanizing. And often, you're pitching to people who have no interest in what you're selling because you didn't do your homework or simply ask them.
So, what does work is bringing the same authentic approach you use in regular conversations to your online interactions. To guide these conversations, I use a simple framework called EARN. Earning trust and respect is the easiest way to get your foot in the door to any form of relationship. Plus, keep an open mind that not all relationships will or should become client relationships. There's value in all types.
Introducing my EARN Framework
100% of why this works comes down to your intentional use of the EARN framework (Engage, Align, Relate, Nurture):
E - Engage
Start conversations with genuine curiosity. I don't have an agenda or intention other than to provide value and help when I begin. This means leaving thoughtful comments on others' content, sharing valuable insights, and participating actively in relevant groups. I also make sure my profile tells people more about me, and my content continues to build trust. This makes it easy because it creates natural starting points for meaningful conversations without the pressure of selling.
A - Align
Find common ground and shared interests. With one client, we discovered a mutual passion for cooking and spent most of our early conversations exchanging recipes! With another, we bonded over our dislike of cold pitch DMs and discussed alternative approaches they preferred. This alignment happens naturally when you โmirror your customer's toneโ and apply cognitive empathy to let them know you're on their side.
R - Relate
Build meaningful connections based on authentic sharing. Sometimes this means bonding over shared experiences or challenges. Others itโs just listening and validating. I focus on personalized communication rather than generic messages, share relevant personal stories when appropriate, and look for opportunities to help others without expecting immediate returns.
N - Nurture
The magic to build โprofitableโ relationships is always in the follow-up. Develop relationships over time without forcing outcomes. I'm not just looking to convert clients from my connections. Iโm looking for more since 60% of my clients become repeat clients. This means staying in regular contact, remembering important dates, celebrating others' successes, and continuing to provide value even when there's no immediate business opportunity.
Now It's Your Turn to Try Out the EARN Framework
The EARN Framework offers a powerful approach to building authentic connections that convert without feeling pushy or salesy. By engaging with genuine curiosity, aligning with shared interests, relating through meaningful sharing, and nurturing relationships over time, you can create lasting connections that lead to successful outcomes.
This approach not only saves time by focusing on genuine relationships but also fosters trust and respectโessential elements for any successful business partnership. Whether you're looking to grow your client base or build a supportive network, the EARN Framework provides a simple yet effective strategy for achieving your goals.
As you use this framework, you'll naturally learn where someone is, where they want to be, and how you might help them bridge that gap. And watch your relationships form easily, without forcing them in a certain direction. Instead, you're guiding, which is much lighter, easier, and more effective. Plus, it saves you a lot of time! I call it the 'lazy way' for marketing.
Now, it's your turn to try out the EARN Framework! Share your experiences and insights by clicking here and sending me a DM on LinkedIn (no sales pitch, I promise). If you're ready to dive deeper, consider joining our Collective for access to workshops, coaching, and resources designed to help you turn comments into clients with ease.
Want to learn how to put the EARN framework into action?
This past Monday, I delivered a workshop - Clients from Comments: The No-Ick, No-Hustle Strategy for Turning Comments into Clients - that takes this framework to the next level!
Just a few of the comments made by participants:
'I found myself being like, 'oh, that's who I'm supposed to comment on.'
'I thought this is really helpful and yeah, it's interesting and exciting, you know, it's not like something that I feel like I'm going to be dreading... like I have to get a system in place, and I'm looking forward to it.'
'That's really simple and easy for me because my life is always about time. To find something purposeful to comment on and quickly create a meaningful comment... That's gold to me.'
You'll discover not just how to use EARN effectively, but also my VALUE framework for crafting comments that actually convert, plus a complete system for identifying whose content to engage with and which types of content perform best.
